What is the new nitro without plasticizers?
This new nitrocellulose is a recreation of the lacquer used by Fender and Gibson throughout the 1960s. The formulation has been modified by removing plasticizers to increase its rigidity, resulting in a varnish that easily achieves a more natural and vintage look.
The main advantage over other nitrocellulose lacquers is its rapid evaporation and fusion between layers, allowing for a more noticeable gloss effect and greater wood vibration.
Application Guide:
– Before starting the process, the surface must be properly prepared. The grain must be filled and sealed beforehand.
– Start by lacquering the sides first, then move on to the front and back faces.
– Movements should be linear, first horizontal and then vertical, and you should not overload the surface.
– The product should be applied from a distance of about 25 cm.
– For best results, the temperature at the application site should be between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How many spray cans do I need to lacquer my guitar?
This will depend on the thickness of the layers and your skill with the spray. If it is your first project, I recommend using 2 spray cans for an optimal finish. If you are more experienced, one may be enough.
Where should I perform the process?
A clean site is essential to prevent dirt or dust particles from adhering to the surface. It is also important that the environment does not have excessive humidity or extreme temperatures.
Is it mandatory to sand between coats?
It is not always required, but it is recommended to remove any imperfections left in the paint at the end of each coat, as well as any particles that may have adhered.
Will this lacquer check/crack with forced temperature changes?
Checking lines should appear as soon as the guitar comes out of the freezer, provided you have followed the previous steps correctly. The most important thing is to respect the drying times of the nitrocellulose, as the cracking process will be more difficult if it is not completely dry.
Can I easily achieve a relic/cracked effect with this lacquer?
If you place the guitar in the cold and then cover the surface with our Relic Patina upon removal, the lines will be easily highlighted, even if they are fine.
Once the guitar returns to room temperature, you can repeat the freezing process using the Freezing Spray + Relic Patina. With this process, you can achieve more pronounced checking in specific areas of the guitar, allowing you to slightly customize the final relic effect.
For the use of these two products, please follow the recommendations on their specific product data sheets.
By following our instructions and combining both products with the Golden Age lacquer, you will achieve the desired effect on your guitar.
IMPORTANT:
- The spray product contains a higher amount of solvent and therefore does not produce very deep checking. If you are using spray and want more pronounced cracking, you should use Relic Gloss.
- The 1L tin product should be mixed with approximately 15% solvent/thinner. The higher the proportion of solvent, the less aggressive the resulting cracking will be.
Extra Tip: Regardless of the format you use, if cracks do not appear after the guitar comes out of the freezer for the first time, repeat the freezing process 2-3 more times. Combining this with Freezing Spray will make the process more effective and customized.
